What you need to know about building and entering a scarecrow...
At the centre of the Swinton Scarecrow festival is of course the display of scarecrows; these will be exhibited in and around St Margaret's Parish Church. There will be a range of scarecrows made by organisations and individuals from Swinton and the surrounding area.
The essential information for making a scarecrow, and entering it into the competition, can be found on these pages, together with some links to other sites for ideas and inspiration. If after reading the information here you have any questions, please contact us.
The competition
To enter a scarecrow, simply complete and submit the form at the foot of this page (Hard copy entry forms are also available on request), build your scarecrow and bring it to St Margaret's Church preferably on Wednesday 14th (between 10:00 and 18:00) or on Thursday 15th (between 9:00 and 14:00) There are four categories for the competition 1) Commercial organisations* 2) Non-commercial organisations - Adult 3) Non-commercial organisations - Children 4) Individual/Family *There is a £10 entrance fee for Commercial organisations only (all other categories are free to enter). Theme
The theme for the scarecrow displays is the 'Best of British' which gives a huge scope for creating a wide range of interesting and amusing scarecrows.
Judging
Scarecrows will be judged on creativity, originality, use of the theme and public opinion.
Scarecrow displays
Scarecrows will exhibited both inside the church and in the immediate vicinity outside of the church (this year we would love to see more outdoor scarecrows!). Scarecrows can be rigid and free standing, that is built on a frame (see tips on building a scarecrow below) or on a frame which is knocked into the ground. Scarecrows can also be soft in construction, for hanging from a roof beam or tree, or perched in a window recess. They can be 'life-size' or smaller (but not too small that they get lost!).
