Baptisms

A Baptism (also known as a Christening) is a joyous event, the sign and seal of a new life in Christ. It is also the way of entering into the life of the Church and many families bring their children to St Margaret's for Baptism.
The clergy are always happy to discuss the significance and importance of Christian Baptism, any practical questions that may arise in planning your child’s Baptism and the responsibilities of bringing up children in the Christian Faith.
Baptisms usually take place on a Sunday at 12 noon or 1:00pm by arrangement with the Vicar.
We hope that it will be a happy and memorable occasion for all concerned and, like everything else that is important in life, your child’s Baptism will require careful planning and preparation.
As part of your preparation for your child’s Baptism, and to introduce you to the Church family at St Margaret’s, you will be expected to come to the Parish Mass in church on at least two Sundays. The Sunday Service starts at 10:00am and usually lasts just over an hour; there is a little play area for children and a small group for older children.

Choosing your godparents.
God parents play an essential role in the Baptism of a child, and it is important that you think carefully about your choice of godparents.
A godparent is taking on a special responsibility for your child, they are making a promise that they will help you bring up your child in the Christian faith.
Anyone can be a godparent providing they are over the age of 16 and that they themselves have been baptised.
It is usual to have three godparents. Traditionally, these are two people who are the same sex as the child, and one person who is the opposite sex. It is possible to have up to four godparents, but no more.Once you have booked your baptism, and shortly before the day, you will be required to fill in a Baptism form which includes the names of the godparents; the priest will need proof that the Godparents have been baptised. eg: a photocopy of their baptism card or baptism certificate, or confirmation certificate.
Adults who have not been baptised as children may find themselves wishing to make a commitment to Christ and to the life of the Church. This is not uncommon and the clergy will also be happy to discuss this with you.
To book, or discuss, a baptism please visit the church on any Monday evening (excluding Bank Holidays)
between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm.
Please note, to have your child baptised in St Margaret's Church, you must live in Swinton, or have been married in the church, or be on the Church Electoral Roll (which means that you attend church regularly on a Sunday, and are part of the Church community).
